Monster Flute!!
FLIGHT had a gig at the Southbank Centre this month, playing background music at a private function. Gareth premiered his new contra-bass flute. It stands at 9ft tall and is like the double bass of the flute family. It sounded especially good with the jazz tracks...

Thanks to the wonderful boys at BigMess Productions, FLIGHT have a new Showreel Video! Filmed at the wonderful Hurtwood House Studio, we had fantastic fun doing it. Our huge thanks go out to BigMess's Chris and Adam, and to Angela Watson and Hollie Clarke from the Davinia Make-up Academy who did a great job with our hair and make-up.

African Fluting...
This month, two members of FLIGHT spent ten days in Nairobi, Kenya! The project: 'Music for Life', was organised by the Concordia Foundation (www.concordiafoundation.com). Abbie and Gareth performed at Braeburn Theatre, the British High Commission and at the famous Mathaiga Country Club (featured in the book and film 'Out of Africa').
A jam-packed schedule, aside from the concerts, we taught over 150 kids, from schools, slums and orphanages, to play the fife and gave them Lifestraws (straws that filter polluted water). We gave flute masterclasses in their music conservatoire and found a spare day to go on safari, feed giraffes and see the baby elephant orphans.
In other news...
Gareth has been playing in the West End production of 'The Wizard of Oz', Clare has been playing with the BBC Phil and Abbie performed a concerto with the Scottish Sinfonia at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Also, Clare and Abbie performed at a wedding in Petersfield, playing flute and bass flute. The groom requested Bach's Goldberg Variations (Aria) and Gareth composed a special arrangement.

Nymphing About...
It's been a good month for FLIGHT. Our recent gigs have been lots of fun and one in particular was rather unique...
We were asked to perform at a wedding reception and the theme was 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', so the agency (Young Guns UK) wanted us to dress up as Wood Nymphs! We love a chance to dress up and follow a theme, so it was a welcome task! The event took place in the gardens of Came House in Dorchester, it was a really beautiful place with stunning countryside views (it was a filming location for the BBC TV Series of Jane Austin's 'Sense & Sensibility'). It was the job of the Wood Nymphs to frolic and dart about the trees, playing our wooden whistles. It was great fun! We had a particularly sweet moment when the children sat with us and sang along as we played various nursery rhymes.

At the end of June, Gareth and Abbie went on a road trip to Shrewsbury to play at the RAF Shawbury Summer Ball. It was rumoured that Prince William might be there as it was his base, but unfortunately we didn't spot him!
Also, we're planning our video shoot, showcasing our tracks, and the date is now set. Very exciting!
In other news...
Gareth has been playing in West End Show 'Love Never Dies', Clare has been playing with the BBC Philharmonic and Abbie had a recital at the Proms at St Jude's Festival in Hampstead.

A trip to Morocco...
We were very excited when FLIGHT were asked to perform at Caftan 2011, a famous fashion show held at Espace Hôtel Mansour Eddahbi in Marrakech. A yearly event, entitled “La Semaine De La Mode” (Fashion week), it showcases Moroccan and Eastern haute couture.
Unfortunately Gareth was playing at the O2 arena with Tim Minchin and the Heritage Orchestra, so we had to find a replacement. Luckily our flutey friend Martha was keen to step in and us three girls had a fantastic trip! We really enjoyed performing at such an amazing event and even found the time to go shopping in the souk, have our photos taken with snakes, do some sunbathing and attend the show's afterparty at the famous So club. A wonderful experience, we all want to return for a holiday very soon!

Back in April, FLIGHT provided some background music for an event at the Department of Education in London. It was the closing party of a three day conference and we played some of our new arrangements.
Clare & Abbie also played as a duo for an outreach concert at St Raphael's Hospice in Sutton for Music in Hospitals and for a wedding in Milton Keynes.
In other news...

Buttons!!!...
FLIGHT were asked to perform at the launch of the Celebrity Art Button Book, a charity art book featuring artwork based around a button. Contributors include Sir Richard Branson, Stephen Fry, Dame Judy Dench, Sir Paul McCartney and 236 other celebrities (actors, chefs, singers, royalty, authors, politicians and academics). Organiser and creator of the book Karen Gammon said:
In January, Abbie and Clare also performed as a duo for a wedding in Gloucestershire. The bride particularly wanted us to perform Eidelweiss during the signing of the register, so Gareth wrote a beautiful arrangement especially for her. It was a really beautiful wedding and we were so pleased to be part of Anna and Gary's special day.
In other news...
By coincidence, FLIGHT players had a very busy Christmas performing in various shows across the UK. Gareth was playing in Oliver! in London's West End, Clare was booked for a two month run of The Secret Garden in Birmingham's Repertory Theatre, and Abbie was playing in The King & I for seven weeks in Leicester's Curve Theatre.
"Thank you for playing at the Celebrity Button Art Book Launch. The music helped make the evening a great success and was enjoyed by all who came. I shall definitely be inviting you to play at any future events that I organize. Brilliant!!"
